Breast cancer awareness isn’t just a month — it’s an all-hands-on-deck effort. Fighting breast cancer takes an army of professionals.
Behind every diagnosis and treatment plan are the lab professionals and pathologists whose work patients rarely see, but whose impact is profound. As a survivor, I know firsthand how critical their role is. My own diagnosis — a Grade 2 invasive carcinoma — began with a biopsy and pathology report that set the course for my care. Later, I had the opportunity to meet with my pathologist and learn more about my disease through digital pathology. Seeing my own tissue slides and having them explained in clear, human terms transformed my understanding of what was happening inside my body. It gave me a sense of connection, empowerment, and peace that I didn’t expect.
Throughout treatment, I also came to appreciate the unseen laboratory technicians who made my chemotherapy possible. Every chemo day began with a blood draw, and I relied on the lab to deliver timely and accurate results to ensure it was safe for me to proceed. Their precision and dedication made a world of difference.
Most patients don’t realize that the laboratory and pathology hold the key to every diagnosis, every treatment plan, and every moment of hope that follows. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month — and every month — I encourage patients, clinicians, and the public to recognize and celebrate these essential members of the healthcare team. Because without the lab and pathology, awareness wouldn’t lead to action — and action is what saves lives.
The lab and pathology teams are at the heart of diagnosis, screening, and testing — and they make sure each treatment plan is working. As a survivor, I know just how critical their role is, and I will always be grateful to the professionals in the lab and pathology who helped save my life.
