I am very distressed by the current state of medical school teaching, in which students and residents in non-pathology disciplines receive almost no systematic education in pathology. I firmly believe in what Sir William Osler once said: “There are, in truth, no specialties in medicine, since to know fully many of the most important diseases a man must be familiar with their manifestations in many organs.” That is impossible without a good grounding in general pathology.
